Running a business when you’re young is one of the toughest things to do. You need a clear vision, a well-rounded team to assist you with your goals as well as a long list of other qualities that goes hand-in-hand to get the job done. Someone who is very familiar with this process is none other than Seanella, the CEO of New York-based publication A.R.T.S.Y (Art-Rebel-Trends-Style-Youth). In our recent interview below, Seanella describes the purpose of the publication, how important her team is to the magazine and even hints the next face to grace the cover of their forthcoming issue set to release in June.

Who are you and where are you from?
I tend to believe I’m a leader with a great purpose passing through this place called earth. I doubt that’s what your question is about so I don’t think I have an answer to “Who are you?” For the second part of the question, I’m from Queens, NY.

Explain your job title at A.R.T.S.Y Magazine & what it is you do.
I’m the CEO at A.R.T.S.Y Magazine. I take care of everything that deals with the business aspect of the publication. Since we’re a small team, I also have a huge say in who we place in the issue as well as who makes the cover. I help build the back-bone of the company by enlightening my group of leaders about the publication world and how we can make our publication different and striking to our viewers.

You guys have gone on to select some creative people for the cover of A.R.T.S.Y. Some interesting faces like 13th Witness, Max and Cyrus of DeadHeartNYC, ADEEN, etc. How do you guys go about the selection process for the cover?
Our cover is the most important but stressful thing we go through here at A.R.T.S.Y. Every year, we release 3 issues each relating to music, fashion and art. We make choices about who’s going to be on the cover based on who’s next in that particular industry. We also think about if that individual is worthy to be on the cover, do they have enough supporters that will go out and purchase the magazine, is their story interesting enough, etc.

It’s to my understanding you guys are on your seventh issue. How important is it to have a team that’s focused?
It’s really important to have a focused team and more importantly a team that can motivate one another because this is not something that’s easy. You don’t wake up and say,”Let’s start a magazine.” You have competitors out there. I’ve seen so many new up-and-coming magazines after A.R.T.S.Y was created but we’re doing something totally different. Overall, it’s about having people who are passionate about what they want to do. We don’t have followers on A.R.T.S.Y. We are all leaders and that’s really important to us.

Whose idea was it to start A.R.T.S.Y Magazine and what purpose does it serve?
It was my idea to start A.R.T.S.Y. The purpose of A.R.T.S.Y is to be a platform for underground and emerging artists to share their work and have their supporters know more about them. Soon, A.R.T.S.Y will serve as a encyclopedia to know who’s next to make it in the game.

How did you get started in the magazine industry?
How did I start? Well it’s more about what influenced me. I got tired of mainstream publications because I felt like they were feeding our youth and my peers garbage. It’s a bigger picture behind this company other than it being just a publication. My goal is to build a group of leaders/entrepreneurs to empower. A.R.T.S.Y will serve as a platform to be creative and also to challenge my peers everyday. I also started this publication to give emerging artists the platform to share their work, before they get discovered by the mainstream publications. Many artist deserve a place to share their work, and A.R.T.S.Y is becoming that place.

What’s the most important thing about running a brand like A.R.T.S.Y?
The most important thing is keeping my leaders motivated and making sure they’re challenging their minds for every issue. If my leaders are motivated and are bringing great content to every issue, then that keeps our readers coming for more. It’s all about keeping my team stable and motivated.

Any information on the next issue?
So our next issue is coming out June 16th of this year. We have rapper Kirk Knight of Pro Era on the cover. With this forthcoming issue, people will have the option of printing it out or viewing it with the A.R.T.S.Y app we provide for our readers. That’s about it for now.
